What Happens When the Alternator Gets Too Old?

The alternator may get too old after you have put 100,000 miles on the odometer. It may also get too old after 10 years. Either way, you need to replace the alternator when it goes bad so it can generate the electricity your vehicle’s electrical system needs to power the accessories and components. If your alternator is malfunctioning, you will have one or more of the following problems.

It Overloads the Electrical System

An alternator in an automobile will generate up to 14.5 volts of electrical current. The alternator converts the current from its original form of AC into the operating form of DC. If the alternator is going bad, it may actually produce extra power because it is malfunctioning. When this happens, it overloads your vehicle’s electrical system and causes it to overheat.

The Accessories Malfunction

Generally, the alternator produces 13 volts of electricity. The range is 13 volts to 14.5 volts. Anything less than 13 volts will cause your vehicle’s power accessories and components to malfunction. Unfortunately, you will start to have problems with your touchscreen on the center console. You may also have problems with the power windows and seats as well as the navigation system.

The Battery Dies Frequently

The above are just some examples of accessories that will malfunction. Unfortunately, you will also start to have difficulty with your battery because the alternator is not keeping it charged. This is one of the primary functions of the alternator. As such, your battery will die frequently. As an aside, the battery will also die frequently if it is too old. Generally, a car battery will last about three years.

The Headlights Get Dim

In addition to the power accessories, the alternator also provides power to your headlights. If the alternator is malfunctioning, your headlights will be dim or they may flicker. The same will also happen with your taillights and the lights inside of your automobile.

You Hear Growling Noises
